Knowing Our Financial Emotions

Your emotions control more than you can imagine.

Next to the political elections, the holiday season has to be the worst time to watch T.V. We are constantly barraged with tons of advertisements….marketing at its best. The power of marketing is really beyond the comprehension of most individuals. Most say they hate it, but in fact, if you look around, people must love it! From cleaning mops and dusters to mobile phones…good marketing is selling just about anything.

Everyone knows the power.

Just take a look at the people around you….at work, in the mall, at school. How many are wearing clothes, shoes, phones, hats, watches, purses, and underwear that are actively marketed? If there are other tennis shoes that last just as long, fit just as well, look just as good, and are cheaper than Nike, then why would so many prefer Nike?

Well, mostly it has to do with the emotional attachment we tie to the product. For example, Nike represents success, fame, exclusivity. Tiger Woods might represent the ability to overcome adversity, dedication, and the relentless pursuit of perfection. Harley Davidson might represent freedom, free spirit, fun and youth.

The need for fullfillment.

Emotionally we believe the promises and perceptions that marketing creates, and then reward ourselves. Of course, fulfillment never comes because the product was incapable of giving us anything but the tangible item it was in the first place. Face it, tennis shoes are tennis shoes.

Take the offensive.

Maturity seems to bring the true understanding of fulfillment. Maybe it’s because we’ve finally figured out marketing and advertisers are playing us like a fiddle! We finally realize that we don’t need “things” to find fulfillment or impress our friends.

Are you buying the product...or the emotion?

Spend time understanding what emotions are attached to the marketing of the product or service you are considering. Why does a major investment firm market "security" when stocks are crashing and "gains" when it's soaring? Recognizing the power of emotions is a critical step at being a confident and prudent consumer!
